Greetings Everyone

Hello Church! I wanted to write to you and explain what we mean by “congregational meeting”, which we will be having in a few weeks. Our church government is structured around multiple layers of accountability, and that is very good. Let’s take the local congregation as the first level, say First Presbyterian Church in Whitefish. We have members which make up the congregation who vote for two offices; elders who are responsible for the spiritual oversight of the church, and deacons who are responsible for the physical needs of the congregation. Both offices are found in the Bible, and have been part of the Church as displayed in the book of Acts. The elders are part of the “session”, who meet once a month in an open meeting to all congregation members. (If you want to attend please let us know! You are welcome to, the only ask we have is that you observe unless you are asked to engage on a certain subject) The elders represent the church at the regional group, the presbytery. We are a part of the “Glacier Presbytery” of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A.

Congregational meetings are the mechanism by which you as members get to vote on our budget and receive our annual report. In many ways, this is our family meeting in which we celebrate and commit to another year of life together, or the ministry of our church. The Presbytery also receives our report and records our membership roles. This is very important to keep for national records. Why do I write this to you? Because if you are thinking about joining this church, I want you to know that we take membership seriously. We want you to commit to us, which tells us we need to commit to you. Paul instructs church leaders to, “Shepherd God’s flock among you, not overseeing out of compulsion but willingly, as God would have you; not out of greed for money but eagerly…” (1 Peter 5:2) Your elders take seriously our role in “Shepherding”. Part of that is to keep track of who we are responsible for, and part of your role is to be a part of a distinct church, not just the broader, universal Church. Will you think about joining the church in our upcoming membership classes? Even if you think you might want to, please consider attending. The dates of these classes will be said at the congregational meeting. If you want to see how this works, please attend our congregational meeting and see how the family works together.
