Greetings Everyone

Greetings Everyone.

Braxton Hicks.

When my first son was about ready to come into the world, my wife began to go into labor. We rushed to the hospital. Got checked in. Went to our birthing room. Got ready for the change that was to come. After 12 hours the “Labor stopped” and we went home.

36 hours later, it began again. I got the call…we got in the car…we got to the hospital…we checked in and waited. One nurse told us to walk the hallways, that sometimes helped. Another nurse who saw us walking asked how we were doing and through conversation during one of the contractions were told, “If you can talk, it’s not a contraction. It’s Braxton Hicks.

Most men do not have a clue who Braxton or Hicks are. Almost all moms do.

The Cleveland Clinic tells us that

Braxton Hicks contractions are felt during pregnancy and can be mistaken for true labor contractions. Unlike true labor, Braxton Hicks are irregular in frequency, less intense and usually go away if you change positions. These uterine contractions are perfectly normal and might begin in your second or third trimester. They are your body’s way of getting ready for labor, but it doesn’t mean labor is coming.

The 3rd time we went to the hospital, the water had broken and the pain of contractions was augmented. It was the real deal. In a relatively few short hours Isaac came into the world. Hallelujah.

We have had some Braxton Hicks contractions during this pastoral interim period, especially over the past 6 months. First, we thought God had called a wonderful young pastor from Southern California to become the next pastor of FPC. That didn’t turn out too well. Braxton Hicks.

Then we had another young pastor come across our paths from a different denomination. Your PNC worked hard to attempt to make things work but it just didn’t happen. Seems not every pastor wants to be a Presbyterian minister. Braxton Hicks.

Now, after a year and a half of work, after the pains of childbirth, a new pastor has been called and will be beginning work on May 15. Hallelujah!! Terri and I were privileged to have dinner with Raully, Kari, and Sophie Donahue last night. The call of God on their lives to be here and minister is evident. We have experienced similarities in how the hand of God has moved us to new locations. We have known that it was God calling us, we have felt his presence, we have experienced God’s Spirit paving the way even when a lot of the specifics are still to be defined.

I look forward to seeing what God is going to do in this new stage of life at First Presbyterian Church. Just like with the birth of a baby, an adventure awaits as the baby grows and life unfolds. My faith tells me that in the midst of newness, the God who has birthed this new leadership will also be the God who directs this church and its minister and its ministry into the future. This is God’s church. Jesus is our Lord and the Head of the Church. We are blessed to be members of his body that continues to grow and serve and develop and to blossom as the Head of the Body directs and empowers us. For that we can and will continue to give thanks to God. Amen

Walking the road with you.

Mission Update
Bob Marshall Trail Crew
Jim Ramlow is heading up a work crew in the Bob Marshall Wilderness on August 27-30 at Bighead Creek. The trailhead is near Augusta (on the east side of the Wilderness) and the basecamp is three miles in. The work is mostly removing downed trees from the first four miles of trail above the basecamp. A lot of sawing would be involved for those who want to build up their upper bodies!  The trail crew would need to be ready to hike at 8:00 am on August 27.   We are limited to 10 people and there is room for only a couple more people to join.
Flower Sales
We are officially taking Preorders for Flower Sale!  Go to our Sales Page Here!
Flowers will be delivered on May 17/18 just in time for frost free planting!
All profits go to our Youth Mission/Scholarships.
Help with Flower Sales
We have sign up sheets on the bulletin board in Fellowship Hall to help with ALL aspects of the Flower Sale.  From fluffing flowers to unloading the trucks.  From Taking the Money to Counting Flats and marking the invoice!  We could use the entire Mission Team (That’s YOU, our congregation!) to help over the two days, Friday May 17 and Saturday May 18.
FPC YTH —
We have just two gatherings left this school year!  Parents of 4th grade and up, Mark Your Calendars!! May 8th & 22nd.  These are date changes from our usual first and third Wednesday.  We will wrap up our focus on prayer and the attitudes toward prayer.  We’ll start at 6pm with a delicious meal that is provided by a very loving group of people.  And transition into a crazy game or two.  So much love and sooooo much laughter!
